The Health Sciences Centre for Simulation and Innovation (HS²I) is actively reshaping how the next generation of South African doctors trains, making the UP School of Medicine the first in the nation to integrate compulsory ultrasound training directly into its curriculum. Since 2024, the department has included a rigorous, hands-on ultrasound course as a vital component of the 5th-year, 4-month traumatology block. This equips students with essential diagnostic skills through cutting-edge technology.
Innovation in Action
This innovative approach to medical education begins with a crucial preparatory phase. All students must first navigate a comprehensive online curriculum hosted on the Butterfly Academy platform. This foundational training includes three mandatory modules, each culminating in an assessment. Students must master topics such as basic ultrasound physics, various modes of use, and the critical eFAST (Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma)protocol. Only upon achieving an impressive 80% passing mark do they earn their entry into the practical, clinical phase.
Once qualified, students move from virtual learning to the wards for practical sessions. Here, they gain invaluable experience using Butterfly ultrasound probes paired with iPads and the Butterfly iQ app to scan real patients. A surgery consultant provides expert human supervision, but the learning environment is truly revolutionized by the presence of the Butterfly ScanLab artificial intelligence (AI) program. This powerful AI actively guides students during the examination, offering real-time feedback and assistance that simulates expert oversight.
Decisons with Data
The immediate impact of this course has been overwhelmingly positive, reflecting the students’ readiness to embrace technological advancements in medicine. A recent student feedback questionnaire provided compelling data:
- Preparedness: A significant 102 of 126 respondents strongly agreed that the prescribed Butterfly Academy modules sufficiently prepared them for the demanding live practical sessions. The virtual foundation effectively translates into clinical competence.
- AI Utility: An even higher number, 114 of 126, stated they found the AI-driven Butterfly ScanLab very useful during their practical training, underscoring the value of intelligent digital support.
- A New Preference: Perhaps most remarkably, 38 of 126 students revealed they preferred the AI application to human instruction, primarily because of its constant availability. This highlights the undeniable advantage of an ever-present, tireless digital guide in a high-pressure clinical environment.
HS²I proudly champions this pioneering course, which actively integrates theoretical knowledge with high-fidelity, supervised clinical practice. By leveraging the portable, intuitive technology of the Butterfly iQ and the intelligent guidance of ScanLab, the UP School of Medicine is ensuring its graduates are not only familiar with ultrasound but are proficient users.
