As we look back at the innovations from United XR 2025 in Belgium, one solution stands out for its immediate, practical application within our academic walls. While many XR technologies remain in the realm of high-concept prototypes, the VirtualiSurg software suite, paired with industry-leading haptic hardware, represents a “ready-to-implement” bridge between virtual theory and surgical mastery.

The Power of High-Accuracy Input

The core strength of the VirtualiSurg platform lies in its seamless integration with 3D Systems haptic devices. Unlike standard VR controllers that rely on basic vibration, these commercial-grade haptic tools provide force feedback with incredible fidelity.

When a student engages with the VirtualiSurg environment, they aren’t just moving an avatar; they are feeling the distinct tactile resistance of anatomical structures. Whether it is the subtle “give” of tissue or the solid contact of a medical instrument against bone, the system maps natural hand movements to digital actions with millimetre precision. This high-accuracy input is vital for developing the “muscle memory” required for minimally invasive procedures and complex technical gestures.

At the University of Pretoria Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), we are constantly evaluating the “scalability vs. fidelity” equation. VirtualiSurg sits at a unique intersection:

Navigating the Challenges of Scale

The primary consideration for our Faculty remains the cost of the input hardware. Because these 3D Systems haptic devices are high-precision instruments, they require a significant investment compared to standard consumer VR kits.

However, this does not diminish their value; rather, it defines their role within our Simlabs. Instead of a mass-rollout for 300 students at once, VirtualiSurg is ideally suited for specialised, small-group rotations. One high-fidelity station can serve as a “mastery hub” where students rotate to refine specific surgical techniques after they have mastered the basics on our lower-fidelity, scalable devices.

A Strategic Addition to the Simlab Ecosystem

Our mission at FHS is to provide a rich, varied hands-on experience that prepares the next generation of healthcare professionals for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). By incorporating high-fidelity solutions like VirtualiSurg into our ecosystem, we ensure that UP students have access to the same level of technology used in global centres of excellence.
